Bingo: A Fun Way to Learn
Bingo is one of the most enjoyable games being played today. It is a popular fund raising tool, as well as an effective teaching tool, especially for grade school students. Teachers have been using bingo to spice up their day-to-day lessons, and the fun and excitement that the game brings are doing a lot to help the students enjoy the lessons as they learn.
There are many ways to use bingo in the classroom. Many variations of bingo have been created to suit lesson plans and the needs of classroom. Name bingo is one popular bingo variation used during the start of class as a way to help the kids get to know each other.
Another twist to the popular game is math bingo, where numbers are placed on the spaces. The teacher creates simple or complicated math problems, depending on the learning level, and places these problems on small pieces of paper which are placed inside a box. A problem is drawn out one at time and the teacher reads the problem out loud. Students who see the answer to that problem on their card marks that number, and this is done until the students can create a complete horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line on their cards.
Other variations include trivia bingo, where facts about almost every kind of subject can be covered. Instead of numbers, the answers about trivia questions can be placed on the bingo cards, and the teacher calls out the question by drawing them out one by one from a container. Whoever sees the answer on his card and answers the question first gets to cover that space, until he creates a complete line.
In the past teachers either bought premade bingo cards from stores. This was ok as long as the cost was shouldered by the school. Teachers who bought bingo sets out of their own pockets soon realized that the cost of bingo sets was hurting their wallets.
As a result some opted for creating their own bingo cards by hand. This wasn't a bad idea, especially if the pupils were included in the making of the cards. Kids enjoyed the process of creating their own bingo cards, especially when it comes to decorating and designing them.
A better alternative would be to use bingo card making software, which are sold on the internet or available as free downloads. Some sites allow you to create and print your own cards from their templates directly from their site, while others offer downloads of bingo software that you can save in your pc and use every time you need a new batch of bingo cards. Some bingo card software are especially made for classroom use-- you only need to put in the information from your lesson that you want your kids to learn, and the software takes care of the rest.
